Magazines or Catalogues?
One has a great deal of affection for the lowly magazine. It is the artistic and financial culmination of movable type -- disposable yet durable writing. So, when trying to find an article by Christopher Hitchens (who is often wrong but always smart) written a while ago, one had the unpleasant experience of trying to navigate a recent issue of a magazine. Pepsi, the Monkey and $1,000,000,000
The media media, that is, those publications and electronic outlets that cover the communications industry, has uncovered a joint abomination that Pepsi and Warner Brothers TV plan to perpetrate in the coming weeks. It seems that wanting to be a millionaire on the strength of one's trivia knowledge is inadequate; the jaded American public needs a shot at $1 billion -- fortunately, a monkey will give it away to add a touch of dignity. April 15 is the most hated day on the American calendar. This is the day when the paperwork must be mailed so that Uncle Sam gets paid the right amount.
