PETA Targets Children's Consciences
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have threatened to hand out a comic book to the children of women they spot wearing fur. It is a rather bloody graphic item called "Your Mommy Kills Animals." Ethics and animals don't need such friends.
It is easy to laugh at the PETAistas, their good intentions bring them to a ridiculous extreme. And as one wag put it, they are more opposed to fur than leather because it is easier to threaten rich women than biker gangs. Indeed.
But until now, they have been attacking from a morally consistent position. Fur is the result of killing of innocent animals. Their goal has been to stigmatize the wearing of fur, and thus, save the beasts by employing reason and emotion.
Now, though, they have abandoned ethics by creating fear and distrust in children. The word "terrorist" is overused these days, but it would not be amiss to term this tactic unethical. The mind of a child is easily manipulated, and damage once done is hard to repair if it is possible at all. Children are protected by society from their inexperience, naivete and undeveloped judgment. To attack a parent's behavior this way is abuse of the child.
It is a cowardly way to make a point. But then, the children of the rich are less intimidating than the grown rich. Shame they haven't the guts needed to take on some bikers. One might take them and their views seriously. As it is, they are now the People for the Animalistic Treatment of Ethics.
