Senate Fails to Pass Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment -- The cynicism of the American elected elite is broader than the Mississippi and deeper than a James Joyce novel. While the military is grinding away in an unpopular, badly planned and unnecessary war, while the national debt soars, while the schools are failing and while the infrastructure collapses around the ears of the vanishing middle-class, the Republican-led US Senate tried and failed to pass a constitutional amendment banning gay marriages. Now, the social conservatives will be energized, they believe, and vote for the Republican ticket in November. They must think those people are morons.

Zarqawi Whacked, Iraqi Insurgency Continues -- The US dropped two 500-pound bombs on a house north of Baquba in Iraq on Wednesday. Inside was Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, “leader” of Al Qaeda in Iraq, and a first rate jackass. The kind of man who bombs a Muslim wedding in the name of Islam, he was a jihadi who couldn't unjam an automatic weapon without help. The world is better off without him, but the insurgency in Iraq was bigger than this wanker, and it may even get worse for a bit.

Greenspan Says Oil Price Starting to Pinch -- Alan Greenspan is the ex-Chairman of the Federal Reserve. He used to be the American central banker. He formerly held great power. Now, he is just another old guy with an opinion. That opinion, however, carries great weight, and when he told Senators on Wednesday that oil prices were starting to affect the US economy, some tore themselves away from the non-issue of gay marriage long enough to notice.

Canucks Healthier than Yanks, Too -- Last month, a study was reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, and remarked upon herein, that stated rather categorically that the British are healthier than Americans. Well, folks, the news just got worse. Turns out the denizens of the Great White North are in finer fettle, too.
