Far Right Forms Euro-Parliament Grouping

Calling itself “Identity, Tradition and Sovereignty” a band of far-right Members of the European Parliament have united into a parliamentary bloc of 20 MEPs. This is the threshold for campaign funding and other benefits. Ironically, it was MEPs from Bulgaria and Romania that provided the extra faces. The far right had worked to keep those two countries out of the EU. At the same time, a former member of the UK Independence Party and now an independent MEP has joined, which brought calls for his resignation.

The membership includes the Austrian Freedom Party (George Haider’s group) and the Belgian Flemish nationalist Vlaams Belang (independence for Flemish-speaking Belgium and no more immigrants), and two Italian MEPs (including Alessandra Mussolini, Il Duce’s granddaughter). The newcomers are a single MEP from Bulgaria, Dimitar Stoyanov of the Ataka party (who was censured by his national parliament for anti-Gypsy statements he made about a Hungarian MEP), and five from the Greater Romania party, which is anti-semitic, anti-Hungarian and anti-“Roma” (another term for “Gypsy” which some prefer as they believe “Gypsy” carries racist overtones).

As usual, the fascists are putting a polite face on things for the press. Proposed chairman, Bruno Gollnisch, also a member of France’s National Front, said the new group existed to “properly defend Christian values, the family and European civilization.” He added, “If the defense of one’s identity is racism or negative, that is a major new political development. That is not the way we see it.” He also suggested that the motto of the bloc would be “patriots of the world unite.” Absent from the grouping were the patriots in the Scottish National Party, the Welsh Plaid Cymru, or the Basque nationalists. The reason of course is simple – those parties are composed of true patriots not fascists.

Meanwhile, Ashley Mote, an independent MEP for the South East of England who was expelled from UKIP (not officially racist or fascist) in 2004, has verbally joined up. He said, “The formation of a genuine centre-right multinational group in the European Parliament is long overdue. So is the need for the clear expression of the views held by millions of European Union citizens who profoundly disagree with the federalists and their vocal left-wing.” He was bounced out of the UKIP for what he described as a political prosecution over housing benefit fraud.

A spokeswoman for the UKIP told the BBC that her organization was “shocked and horrified” that the ex-UKIP member would team up “with people like [French National Front leader] Le Pen. People in the South East of England did not vote for this and he should have the decency to resign and give UKIP back their seat.” Actually, it is his seat, since he was elected to it, but it does seem to have been under false pretenses.

So, now the European Parliament has an official grouping for those who miss the good old days, when men were men, women were women, and the leader was always right. Unfortunately, this isn’t just old folks missing their youth. At 23, Mr. Stoyanov is the youngest MEP and this is especially troubling for Europe’s future, particularly when he says things like “There are a lot of powerful Jews, with a lot of money, who are paying the media to form the social awareness of the people.” This is a repeat of a very unpleasant film.
