Journalists off the BALCO Case Hook -- The BALCO case revolves around baseball players and steroid use. Two people faced jailed time over it. Oddly, neither used steroids nor played baseball. They didn’t supply the substances to ballplayers, and they were guilty only of doing their jobs. Thanks to a plea deal from another party, San Francisco Chronicle reporters Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada will not be going to jail for contempt of court. Heck, they should be given medals.

Brigade’s Deployment Changed to Afghanistan from Iraq-Nam -- The 173rd Airborne Brigade, based in Vicenza, Italy, was supposed to deploy to Iraq-Nam as part of the normal rotation of troops. Earlier this week, in response to a request from the commander in the field, the 173rd is going to Afghanistan. This will keep America’s strength in the country at 27,000, the highest it’s ever been. Other troops will be found to take the brigade’s place in Iraq. It’s a case of redeploying Peter to replace Paul.

State Farm to Pull out of Mississippi Home Insurance -- State Farm has 30.3% of the Mississippi state home insurance market, the biggest slice of the pie. Yet, the company has decided to cease writing new policies for the market. Robert L. Trippel, a senior claims officer with parent company State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance, said in a statement Wednesday, “[I]t is no longer prudent for us to take on additional risk in a legal and business environment that is becoming more unpredictable. When there’s more certainty, we will reassess the situation.” State Farm is making a huge mistake.

UNICEF Says Dutch Kids Best Off -- UNICEF has issued a report with the cumbersome title: “Child Poverty in Perspective: An overview of child well-being in rich countries. A comprehensive assessment of the lives and well-being of children and adolescents in the economically advanced nations.” According to UNICEF, the Dutch do best by their kids followed by Scandinavia, while the Yanks beat out only the Brits who come dead last.
