Why Not?

Colbert Runs for President

Stephen Colbert is running for president and has thrown his hat into the ring in South Carolina. He’s running both as a Democrat and a Republican. His ambition is not to be president but rather to run for president. It’s troubling when a comedian gets involved in politics as a joke, and the media can’t help but treat him seriously.

Mr. Colbert was on “Meet the Press” yesterday, which in and of itself is a sign that the joke is on someone at NBC. Part of the interview went like this:

RUSSERT: Why are you doing it?

COLBERT: I’m doing it, Tim, because I think our country is facing unprecedented challenges in the future. And I think that the junctures that we face are both critical and unforeseen, and the real challenge is how we will respond to these junctures, be they unprecedented or unforeseen, or, God help us, critical.

RUSSERT: You’ve thought this through.

COLBERT: That’s a generous estimation. Thank you.
He’s funnier than Governor Huckabee, less menacing than John McCain and he’s more actively engaged in campaigning the Fred Thompson. But what happens when he actually starts beating some of the third tier candidates? Actually, one is rather looking forward to that.
