Boston Wins World Series in a Sweep

Regular readers know that this journal and the City of Boston, Massachusetts, are like fire and ice. So it is with particular pain that one has to report that the Red Sox of Beantown are the World Series Champs. Not only did they defeat the Colorado Rockies, they did it in four games. This journal had predicted a sweep, just not like that.

The Rockies headed to the World Series as that most dangerous of teams, the team that got hot at the right time. Back in September, they were in a position where they had to win every game just to make it to a single-game play-off against the San Diego Padres. They did it, and beat the Padres. Then, they swept the Diamondbacks and the Phillies to take the National League Crown. Indeed, they won 21 of 22 games in that glorious run. But by winning so quickly, they had 8 days off while the Red Sox continued to play for their spot at the World Series. The Rockies simply cooled off.

This is not to say that the Red Sox aren’t worthy of the championship. If the franchise were located in a different part of the country, one could even warm to them. David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez are a tough combination to hate. Curt “Bloody Sock” Schilling will always have the respect of anyone who loves the game for that one game he pitched with an ankle that was stapled together. And Josh Beckett is as fine a pitcher as any in the game.

In addition, the Red Sox play in the American League East, which has the hated Yankees. Any victory for Boston, despite what Rudy Giuliani might believe, tears at the hearts of the Bronx faithful. New York’s papers hardly mentioned the Sox this morning. The sports lead story was Alex Rodriguez and his decision to leave the Yankees. Not really a good call as a piece of journalism.

So, with baseball done, America has the NFL and NBA gearing up. Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year’s Day are rapidly approaching. Right after that, the Iowa Caucuses and the New Hampshire Primary and the rest of them come. It’s nice to know that pitchers and catcher report in just over three months.
