Mitchell Report Exposes 85 Major Leaguers as Steroid Users

George Mitchell, former senator, former prosecutor, former diplomat, delivered his 400-page report on his investigation into steroid use in Major League Baseball yesterday. There are big names and guys who barely made the majors. Every team was affected. Senator Mitchell said, “The response by baseball was slow to develop and was initially ineffective,” and it was. The Hall of Shame’s members and their 2007 teams are:

What bothers most is not really the steroid and human growth hormone use; one isn’t surprised by hyper-competitive individuals using any means to become and remain winners. It is morally wrong, but sportsmanship suffers when $100 million contracts are involved. What is irritating is no one (save Messrs. Giambi and Gibbons) has owned up to it. Through his lawyer, Roger Clemens said, “Slander!” One doubts it. There won’t be a single lawsuit in all of this because if there were, everyone would have his day in court – something most of these men have reason to fear. And by their silence, they will have confessed.
