Lincoln Club Threatens GOP Leadership -- The Republican Party is in no small amount of trouble, as the polls clearly show. One group of GOP activists, the Lincoln Club of Orange County, wants change – but not the kind Obamaniacs desire. They want new leadership in the Republican Caucus on Capitol Hill. If they don’t get it, they’re going to “review its financial backing of all Congressional Republicans.” That’s the ultimate threat in American Politics, no more money.

G-8 Leaders Paper over Environmental Cracks -- The G-8 Summit in Japan issued some environmental drivel in the final communiqué that will allow the rich countries of the world to do very little on greenhouse gas emissions until some of the rapidly growing economies (e.g., India and China) do likewise. To which these countries will reply, “when we have your standard of living, sign us up.” Indeed, some of those countries met with the G-8 summiteers and said more needed to be done than the communiqué suggested.

UK Tax Court Says Pringles aren’t Crisps -- A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but a potato snack that isn’t called a “crisp” (“chip” for US readers) doesn’t have to pay Britain’s 17.5% value-added tax. So, the people at Procter and Gamble went to tax court in the UK to have their Pringles brand snacks, which are clearly labeled as “potato crisps” on the container, declared “not crisps” for tax purposes. On Friday, the judge declared P&G correct; Pringle’s aren’t crisps.

Hammer and Tickle Takes Itself Too Seriously -- Anti-Soviet humor was one of the ways that the victims of red fascism kept their sanity. Ben Lewis has put together a great collection of such yucks under the title Hammer and Tickle. The drawback to the book is his insistence on a “serious comparative study.” Best advice is to skip those bits and laugh and cry at the humor itself.
