Obama’s “Infomercial” Did Its Job -- For $5 million, Senator Barack Obama bought himself 30 minutes of airtime on 7 different TC networks on Wednesday night. His objective was to calm the fears of white working-class voters, make an appeal to the “redneck” vote. In this, he largely succeeded.

Numerous Bombs Explode in Assam, India -- Yesterday, a dozen or so bombs went off within an hour of each other in the Indian state of Assam. At least 70 are dead, including 5 who were slain in front of the District Magistrate’s Court of Guwahati, the state’s capital city. While a Muslim group has claimed responsibility, authorities believe the bombings were part of a campaign by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), a pro-independence group committing violence since 1979.

Fed Cuts Key Interest Rate to 1% -- The Federal Open Market Committee held a regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday and Wednesday. At the end of it, the FOMC voted to cut the Fed Funds rate 50 basis points to 1.0%. This is worrisome because the Fed is about out of room to cut. There are other ways for the Fed to boost the economy, but it is close to losing its most powerful weapon. Rates can’t drop below zero.

Detroit’s Citizens Fight Devil’s Night Arson -- A couple of decades ago, a dreadful tradition arose in the city of Detroit, Michigan. The night before Halloween, abandoned buildings were set on fire on so-called “Devil’s Night.” At its height in 1984, the Associated Press says there were 810 fires reported from October 29 to 31. This year, the Detroit Free Press says “As of 10:30 p.m. [last night], Detroit had recorded 39 fires on Thursday, 11 of them suspicious, according to mayoral spokesman Daniel Cherrin. That number -- 39 -- is down 5 from last year.” A volunteer watch system has made the difference.
