This Week's Commentary: Volume VIII, Number 25
Palin Announces Resignation as Alaska's Governor -- Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska announced Friday afternoon that she would resign her position effective July 25. She said that she didn't want to run for re-election and didn't want to be a time-serving lame duck. She stated on her web page that her decision to quit would allow her to follow a higher calling. Everyone thinks she intends to make a run for the White House. If that is her intention, she has either received bad advice or has exercised poor judgment or both. [July 6]

US and Russia Agree to Nuke Cuts -- Barack Obama is on a two-day trip to Moscow to "reset" US-Russian Relations. Speaking to a roomful of business students, he said, "Let me be clear: America wants a strong, peaceful and prosperous Russia." As part of that, he and President Medvedev signed an agreement to cut both nations' nuclear arsenals. This will enhance the security of both countries and increase their ability to address proliferation issues with other nations. [July 7]

Depp and Bale Shine in "Public Enemies" -- Johnny Depp may well be the best American actor of his generation, and Christian Bale has improved radically since he bumbled through the role of Anakin Skywalker in the "Star Wars" franchise. They have made a movie together that tells the story of Melvin Purvis of the FBI against John Dillinger, self-employed bank robber. "Public Enemies" may be one of the best movies of the year that has received some of the worst reviews. [July 8]

GM Leaving Bankruptcy -- General Motors is leaving bankruptcy tomorrow after a mere 40 days under Chapter 11 protection. "I'm very much looking forward to the point where we're operating in the clean air and the name of the company not being associated with bankruptcy," GM sales chief Mark LaNeve told the press. It may take a while, and if the company doesn't start making money almost immediately, it won't happen at all. [July 9]
